Celebrate Eat Local Month

August just so happens to be Eat Local Month. So, in honor of this wonderful occasion Allan and I enjoyed the following delightful salads for supper. Not all of the ingredients were local to MN, but some of the veggies were grown by our friends and in our own backyard.

A yummy summer salad
This salad was a mixture of baby lettuce, japanese cucumber, orange bell pepper, red onion, baby carrots, tomatoes, avocado, grilled chicken breast and long grain brown rice all drizzled with Annie's Lite Raspberry dressing (Maria) and Drew's All Natural Rosemary Balsamic dressing (Allan).

If you enjoyed my What It Means to Eat Clean post from earlier this week, you should check out my guest blog post on Wellness Daily: 5 Simple Ways to Clean Up Your Diet.

Are you participating in the Eat Local Challenge? If so, what fun things have you been eating lately?

Have a fabulous weekend!

The Third Trimester Begins...

... this Wednesday!!! The homestretch is here.

Sorry for my lack of blogging lately. As you can imagine, our lives have been a whirlwind of baby prep lately. Allan jokes that I am full into nesting mode.

A month ago, we made the decision to cloth diaper, so I have been working on acquiring our stash from online retailer sales, online clearance outlets, Peapods (a local toy and baby care shop), diaperswappers.com, and the Baby Center Diaper Swapping community. For the newborn stage, we will be using indian cotton unbleached prefolds and misc PUL covers, although we do have some Grandparent-friendly small bamboo fitteds and small FuzziBunz. I am almost finished with the newborn stash, but am interested in acquiring a WAHM wool cover or too for this stage along with some flannel liners for the meconium stage along with any bouts with diaper rash.

We are anticipating a larger baby at birth, because I have measured two weeks ahead at my last 2 appointments (20 weeks and 24 weeks) and my husband and I were both larger and LATE babies. Allan was a whopping 10 lbs and 4 weeks late and I was 9.5 lbs and 2 weeks late. So, at my appointment on Monday (28 weeks), if I am still measuring ahead they will schedule another ultrasound to see how big this little guy really is. I kind of hope that we will get to go and see him again, as ultrasounds are completely amazing experiences!

But I digress... back to the point that I was trying to make: little baby Peters will most likely not fit into the small/infant diapers for long and will be able to move into the one-size BumGenius (3.0 and Organic AIO), GroBaby and Swaddlebees diapers that I have been slowly acquiring. Do any of you cloth diaper? If so, do you have any tips for a first-timer? What is your favorite diaper? Any tips and recommendations would be VERY helpful!

I would like to take a pic of my stash to post here for feedback and ogling! Look for that in an upcoming blog post!

We have also checked the following items off of the baby list:
  1. Nursery furniture purchased and put together
  2. Diaper stash prepped (all natural-fibered items washed 5 times and the rest washed once)
  3. On the waiting list of an AMAZING Day Care that is spanish immersion, serves organic/whole grain foods, cloth diapers and is located near our house
  4. Registered for hypnobirthing classes that start next Tuesday at Blooma
  5. Baby showers scheduled and registries complete (Mar 13 in Albert Lea and April 3 in Eagan)
  6. Play room cleared out and ready as a "blank slate"
  7. Working out 3-4 days per week (at least one cardio day, one weightlifting day and one yoga day)
  8. Car seat purchased (Graco SnugRide 35)
  9. Stroller purchased (Baby Jogger Select)
  10. Keeping all meals CLEAN and eating every 3 hours (protein + complex carbs + fruit/veggie + fat)
I hope that you have an amazingly productive, clean and healthy week!

Eat-Clean Diet Recharged

I received my copy of the Eat-Clean Diet Recharged yesterday. I cannot wait to read it cover to cover!

I spent some time flipping through the pages last night before bed and look what I stumbled upon...

Last summer, I was contacted by one of the editors at Robert Kennedy Publishing and was asked if they could feature my story in one of Tosca's upcoming books. I was thrilled to accept and really excited to see how the editor's would use my Clean Eating story. I was not expecting a full page feature, but am very thankful to be able to share my story with others! So, if you would like to read an excerpt from my transformation story, turn to Page 102!

After I finish reading the book I will be back with a full review!

Tosca just launched her new website and it is very nice. It has a professional feel and features several new resources that were not available on her old site. Overall, I think that the new website really shows off Tosca's personality and is a nice Clean Eating resource.

Big Announcement!

Good Afternoon, Bloggers!

I have a very important announcement to make...

I am pregnant!!!

Baby Peters is due May 19th and I am in my 13th week of pregnancy. I am feeling well and taking good care of myself. In my first trimester, I struggled with all day nausea and fatigue that impacted my day-to-day activities. I also suffered from intense food aversions. As you can imagine these side effects combined made it pretty difficult to cook, bake and workout. Which left me with little to blog about!

The good news is that as I begin my second trimester, I am starting to feel like myself again. I have had a lot more energy and am regaining my interest in food. I was even able to pick up the latest issue of Clean Eating and Tosca’s new cookbook for recipe inspiration!

Being that I am pregnant, my food choices have shifted from weight loss to weight gain; which is a weird feeling and has required a complete shift in my mindset. So far, I have gained 3 pounds and plan on gaining a total of 6-9 pounds in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. So, that leaves me with another 3-6 pounds to gain until the end of December. From 20 weeks on, I plan on gaining 16-20 additional pounds. This will put me at a total weight gain of 22-29 pounds.

For now, I am focusing my workout efforts on prenatal yoga and walking/jogging on my treadmill. I find little interest in weight lifting at this point, but as I regain my energy I plan on creating a pregnancy weight lifting plan for myself.

I would love to hear your thoughts and advice on this wonderful time in my life! I cannot wait to share the next 27 weeks of pregnancy with you along with my newfound motherhood!

Thank you.

Thank you for your support, thoughts, prayers, and encouragement in the last month and a half. It has really meant a lot to both Allan and me.

Allan has been home from the hospital for about a month and is getting stronger every day. His attitude is very positive and he makes progress every day towards a full recovery. Thank the Lord!

We thank God daily for saving Allan's life so that he can experience beauty that God grants us each and every day. Allan's life is truly a miracle!

I plan on starting to blog again about my daily life, eats, and workouts. Even though I have not been blogging recently, I have been taking pics of the simple meals that we have been eating and plan on sharing those with you. Since Allan has been sick, I have simplified our eats and we are both happier that way.

Thanks again for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

”God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

Honest Scrap Blog Award

The lovely and sweet Miss Linda of Linda Gets Fit was sweet enough to present me with the Honest Scrap Blog Award!!!

According to Linda's blog, this is the definition of the Honest Scrap Blog Award...

"This award is bestowed upon a fellow blogger whose blog content or design is, in the giver’s opinion, brilliant. This award is about bloggers who post from their heart, who oftentimes put their heart on display as they write from the depths of their soul."

There are three rules that need to be followed upon accepting this award.
1) Brag about it
2) Select 7 Blogs you find brilliant and link to them
3) List 10 honest things about yourself

How sweet is that?!?

Thank you so much, Linda for the thoughtful award!

I humbly accept the Honest Scrap Blog Award and below are the fulfillment of my acceptance parameters:

One: I always try to write thoughtful blog posts that will really help someone out, it is always rewarding to hear when I have accomplished that. I love seeing that my followers check back often and comment on things that I post. Thanks for being such great readers!!!

Two: I do read a lot of different blogs, but these are my top 7, in alphabetical order...

Three: 10 Honest Things About Myself

1. I really enjoy clean eating and exercising, I feel like there was a part of my personality that was completely dormant before I became healthy. Cooking and baking are some of my favorite ways to relax. When I don't have enough time in the kitchen I can become cranky.

2. I love to shop and always have. Now that I am healthy, I sometimes wander around Whole Foods for ungodly amounts of time. Allan has no clue how it can possibly take anyone as long to grocery shop as it takes me. It's because I am enjoying myself. :)

3. I love lifting heavy weights and running intervals. I have tried steady-state running and lifting light weights and I just don't enjoy it as much. I am really starting to love practicing yoga... even if it is only with DVDs and DVR'd Namaste Yoga. ;)

4. I also have a passion for interior design, fashion, and gardening that goes hand-in-hand with my HGTV addiction.

5. Before I was healthy, I did not want to have kids.... but now that I am happy and healthy I cannot wait until Allan and I have a couple cuties running around the house!

6. I was hit really hard by the untimely death of a very close Uncle last December as he succumb to kidney cancer. Some might say that as a result, I took my clean eating to the next level.

7. I love Hawaii!!! Allan and I Honeymooned in Hawaii 3 years ago and I cannot wait to go back this winter. There is just something about it that is magical. I think that they pump the island air with floral scented endorphins or something...

8. I completely adore my orange furry friend, Mister Piggie. I could talk about him in every blog post because he is always doing something cute and/or funny. He will always be our first baby, even though he is a cat.

9. I am not impulsive. I always think things through before I do anything. This is not a symptom of indecisiveness, it can actually be blamed on the fact that I am extremely decisive and refuse to compromise on what I want in order to make a quick decision. Also, I love a good deal, and have a difficult time paying full price for big ticket items and clothing.

10. There is nothing that I love more than spending time with Allan. He is my best friend and there is no one else on the planet that I would rather be with for the rest of my life.

Phantom Fat

This is a really interesting article about people who loose a great deal of weight and still see themselves as their heavier self rather than their REAL thin self.

Sometimes I feel this way - I am shocked when I look in the mirror and nit-pick at my problem areas. I am working on improving my self image and seeing myself in a realistic light. I am not a fitness model. I don't want to be a fitness model.

I want to be healthy and fit and I am.
I want to be a good example for others and I am.
I want to be able to run up a flight of stairs and not be winded and I can.
I want to go on long walks with my husband and I do.
I want to bike with my husband across town and we do.
I want to wear a bikini and not feel self-conscious and I will.
I want my future children to be proud of me and they will.
I want to be proud of myself and I am.

Summer Goals

Thank you to everyone for the kind words on in regards to my before and after pics from the Competition. It was a little scary posting pictures of myself in a bikini for the world to see! I am really happy with the visible results that I had and the way that my clothes now fit. To celebrate my achievement, I even picked up a couple pairs of size 6 jeans and a skirt!!!

On to my summer goals. Yes, I know that the summer has been here for a while… but with the weather that we’ve had in Minnesota, it feels like the summer is just beginning. Besides, in reality, summer has only been here for 9 days. So, with the start of the summer, I would like to set some realistic goals for myself for the next MONTH. A month doesn’t seem like a long time, just 4 short weeks, but it definitely is enough time to make progress on some of my long-term goals.

Here are the things that I would like to accomplish in the month of July:

  1. Eat clean 95% of the time (cheats will be wine, vodka/soda, or very dark chocolate)
  2. Eat all of my meals on time (every 2-3 hours)
  3. Workout 4 days per week
  4. Vary the types of workouts that I do: yoga, circuit training, biking, running, walking, and heavy lifting
  5. Embrace our organic CSA share (that should be getting more bountiful soon)
  6. Visit the Farmer’s Market more often
  7. Increase my Raw Food consumption and try to eat one raw meal every other day
  8. Read Making The Cut by Jillian Michaels
  9. Read an average of one Psalm per day, starting with Psalm 31 (I read 1–30 in the month of June)
  10. Cut wheat flour out of my diet, as it gives me tummy bloat & headaches (stick to sprouted and grain-based complex carbs)
  11. Embrace healthy fats like avocados, nut butters, and coconut oil
  12. Get 8 hours of sleep every night
  13. Start writing a Cookbook

Yes, you read that right. I have decided to write a Cookbook. I plan on filling the book with both recipes and organization/clean foodie tips, like I have on this blog. You may have noticed that I have not been posting as many recipes lately. This is because I have been busy in the Peters test kitchen experimenting with lots of different recipes, deciding which ones will make it into the book. Rest assured that recipes that do not make the cut will still be posted on my blog along with a few “sneak peak” recipes that do make it into the cookbook.

Do you have any suggestions of recipes that are currently on the blog that I should include in the cookbook? What are your favorites?

12 Week Contest Before and After Pics

If you have been reading my blog for the last couple months, you already know that I participated in a 12 week competition on the Tosca Reno Eat-Clean Diet forum. For more information on the competition, read this blog post.

Here are the goals that I set for myself in this competition and how I did at accomplishing them:
  • Pray for strength, courage, and determination every day - I have been praying a lot lately and definitely feel closer to God, reading the Psalms has been helping a lot with this
  • Loose 17.5 pounds and at least 18 inches - I lost 14.75 inches and 6.5 pounds, I am starting to realize that inches are much more important than pounds
  • Lift weights 2-3 days per week - accomplished, NROL4W is now over... what to do next???
  • Run intervals 2 days per week for 20-30 minutes - I faltered at this as the days became nicer, I spent more time outside with Allan and was biking a lot more instead of running
  • Follow Cooler 2 strictly, allow myself one cheat per week, usually a glass of red wine - with our busy schedule filled with lots of events, parties, and family outings away from home, I ended up having more cheats than one a week
  • Eat more high-water content vegetables instead of fruit - I added a lot more green smoothies to my diet and have been trying some new types of greens and really liking them (kale, chard, etc.)
  • Remember to take my multi-vitamin, omega, calcium/magnesium, digestive enzymes and wheatgrass every day - accomplished and added CLA to the list
  • Eat a variety of protein sources every day - accomplished
  • Stay positive - really working on this one!
  • Create an organization area in my kitchen for a vision board and menu planning - accomplished, just need to fill up the vision board a bit more :)
  • First note for the vision board: "Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken." Psalm 55:2

The following are my results from the competition:

The Competition is Over

Saturday marked the end of the 12 week competition that I participated in on the Tosca Reno forum. As of last night, all of the contestants' before and after photos are up on the site, feel free to pop over to the forum and check them out. If you are already a member, and have been since April 2009, you can vote for your top 6 contestants (3 for each category). Good luck to everyone!

I plan on posting my before and after pictures and results here once the judging is complete next week. Overall, I am really happy with how I did and hope that I place in the judging!

Allan arrived home on Friday night after a week of fishing in Northern Manitoba with his dad. It is so nice to have him home. It was the longest that we have been apart or not spoken to each other in the 5 1/2 years that we have been together.

We ended up having a really nice weekend together filled with test kitchen eats, my first real cheat meal since the beginning of the competition (pizza at the Leaning Tower of Pizza & homemade sangria by the fire!), a long bike ride, some cleaning, errand running, and a movie. Yesterday we went to a matinee of Up in 3D. It was one of the cutest, heart warming movies that I have seen in a while... I might even dare to say that it was better than Wall-E, which I also loved! It was definitely an all ages show that spanned a wide array of mature topics while still being completely suitable for young children. There were several scenes in the movie that pulled at your heart strings and made me well up with tears. What a treat! Thanks, Allan.

Challenge Yourself!

"There is only one success—to be able to spend your life in your own way."
—Christopher Morley

Isn’t the gift of choice amazing? I know that, at times, the overabundance of choices can seem overwhelming, but can you imagine living without them? God is so very good!

I bring this up, because this week I have chosen to make sacrifices in my diet in order to be successful. It has been challenging, but I am already half way there! I am glad that I can lean on God to help me through this season and make me the best that I can be!

How have you been tested in your life? Have you chosen your tests or have they been laid out before you? Know that with hard work and dedication YOU can accomplish anything through God who gives you strength! Keep your chin up, push forward and anything your heart desires can happen!

In my life, I have found that I am the most successful when I have a plan of attack. With one goal in mind, I can set milestones and prepare myself to rise to the challenge. This requires organization and dedication. Preplanning is the key to my weight loss journey and many of the other things that I have accomplished in my life. How are you organizing yourself to succeed?

Today is an excellent day to set goals and define achievable milestones along the way. Where do you want to be in 5 years? What will you do in the next week, the next month, and the next year to work towards this goal? How will you measure your success in the short and long term? What tools will you need in place in order to be successful?

Congratulations on your accomplishments so far and good luck in your future endeavors!

Cooler 1

I am approaching the last week of my 12 week competition and will be stocking up on Cooler 1 items today at the grocery store. On Saturday or Sunday of next week I will take after photos and will be on Cooler 1 until the photos are taken! I am also considering purchasing distilled water and Dandelion tea to aid in "muscle popping". I will keep you updated on my progress and things that I am eating from now until picture day. I may even consider posting my before/after pics.

On a side note, I just ordered a bunch of new bikinis from Victoria's Secret! I am super excited to have some items that actually fit me! I am sick of walking around wearing clothes that are a size Large when I am a Small/Medium. YAY!

Measurements!

As some of you know, I am involved in a 12-week competition on the Clean Eating forum. This week marks the end of week 4 of the competition and our first set of weight and measurements are due on Sunday. Since I am not sure if I will be in town this weekend, I decided to take my measurements and official weight this morning.

Since the beginning of the competition, 4 weeks ago, I have lost 3.5 pounds and 8 total inches!

I felt that this was a great accomplishment because I even took 1 week off of working out due to a knee injury and have not done any hard core cardio intervals since I injured my knee. I am looking forward to the back third of the competition, as my knee is feeling better and I am able to train the way that I normally do. I am back to doing NROL4W and running intervals and feel like I can accomplish a lot in the next 8 weeks!

I want to be a good tree...

No good tree bears bad fruit,
nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.
People do not pick figs from thornbushes,
     or grapes from briers.
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart,
and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.
For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
                                                                       - - Luke 6:43-45
Strive to be a good tree today!

BTW, today was weight-in day and I am down 1.5 pounds this week!!! I guess Laura and Melissa were right when they told me that I could use a week off from heavy lifting to let my knee rest!

12 Week Challenge

I joined a 12 week challenge on the Eat-Clean Diet forum called the Too Chicken to Go on Stage Makeover Challenge. The idea is to see how much you can change your body in a 12 week period. At the end of the challenge two winners will be selected. One will be the girl who looks closest to being able to compete in a figure competition and the other winner will be the girl who has had the most dramatic transformation. I am really not looking to win either prize, but in the next 12 weeks I plan on getting down to my goal weight.

I had already set a goal for myself to get down to goal by mid-June, so the timing is perfect. The reason that I joined the competition is for the support and encouragement of the others girls that are involved. I love the sense of community that a challenge on the forum brings and think that it will help me to feel accountable and keep my mind refreshed.

My goals for the next 12-weeks are the following:
  • Pray for strength, courage, and determination every day
  • Loose 17.5 pounds and at least 18 inches
  • Lift weights 2-3 days per week
  • Run intervals 2 days per week for 20-30 minutes
  • Follow Cooler 2 strictly, allow myself one cheat per week, usually a glass of red wine
  • Eat more high-water content vegetables instead of fruit
  • Remember to take my multi-vitamin, omega, calcium/magnesium, digestive enzymes and wheatgrass every day
  • Eat a variety of protein sources every day
  • Stay positive
  • Create an organization area in my kitchen for a vision board and menu planning
  • First note for the vision board: "Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken." Psalm 55:22
Please pray for me! :)

Thursday Weigh-In Update

Thursdays are my "weigh-in" day. Since body weight fluctuates, I try to keep myself off of the scale all other times except Thursday mornings. Since last Thursday I have lost 1.5 pounds. Only 18 more to go!

Here are a couple more ways to look at my Clean Eating accomplishment so far:
  • I have lost 60% (27 pounds) of my goal weight and only have 40% (18 pounds) more to go. That seems doable to me!
  • So far I have lost 15% of my total beginning body weight and 18 pounds is only 11% of my total body weight right now. Another encouragement.
Start looking at the smaller amounts of weight that you loose as a sum of what you have already accomplished and you will feel motivated!

Courage

“Courage is the ladder on which all other virtues mount.” —Clare Boothe Luce

In order to inspire change in your life you must first have courage. According to Princeton University’s WordNet, courage is...
“a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger or pain without showing fear”
I love the way that this is worded. Most people have a fear of the unknown and change is definitely an unknown. In order to have the courage to make changes in our lives we need to obtain a quality of spirit that will enable us to face the pain of change without showing or even thinking about fear.

If you have a dream - don’t give it up because you are afraid. Fight for what will make you happy. Personally, I have always envisioned my body as thin. Looking back at photos of myself 47 pounds ago is painful – because in my mind I did not look like that. However, when I finally came to the realization that I needed to do something to change my life to become healthier and happy I needed to have the courage to make a drastic change in my life. I prayed to God and asked for the courage to make the change so that I could start treating my body like a temple.

To say “no” to unclean foods is easy if you have courage – plan ahead for difficult situations and come prepared! The second half of preparation is the follow-through. Have the courage to stick to your plan no matter what happens. There will always be temptations and occasionally you will give in. However, when you do have an unplanned cheat – don’t get down on yourself. Have the courage to pick yourself up and lend some words of encourage instead of doubt. The way that you talk to yourself plays a large role in your self-esteem. Treat yourself with respect and encouragement and you will reap the rewards.

If you are planning on asking God for courage here are some Bible verses for inspiration:
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.."
- II Timothy 1:7
“For since Jesus Christ himself has passed through the test of suffering, He is able to help those who are meeting their test now.” Hebrews 2:18
“God is faithful and will not let you be tested beyond that you are able but will with the testing time make a way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
“My God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
“God said to me, my grace is sufficient for you. My strength is made perfect in your infirmity.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
“And we know that in all things God works together for the good of all them that love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

An Amazing Transformation Begins

"It is impossible not to love someone who makes toast for you." —Nigel Slater

I have decided to post before and after pictures of myself – from 200+ pounds to where I am now. It’s still a bit difficult for me to see the transformation, 45.5 pounds lighter and sometimes I still feel like I look the same as I did back in 2005 before I started loosing weight.

Christmas of 2005, I found myself in the full swing of wedding preparations. I had purchased and received my wedding dress, which my mom had to pay an extra $50 for a size 18 to fit my bust measurements, the location was booked, and it was time to take care of the small details. I knew that I did not want to be overweight on the “happiest day of my life”. I was determined to change something – anything in my life – so that I could feel good about the person starring back at me in the mirror.

I had always been overweight growing up – but not this overweight. The challenges of going to college full time and working 30 hours a week had taken a toll on the way that I nourished myself and left little time for physical activity. I had gained over 20 pounds since I had met my husband just a short 2 years earlier. How had this happened?

I knew that I would need to take drastic measures, but I did not have the time to work out several times per week. I would have to revamp my diet and make the most out of my trips to the gym. My mom was a member at the local Curves and had joined a class that followed the Curves way of eating. Basically, you followed a pre-set 6-week menu that consisted of 5 smaller meals per day. You ate exactly what the menu told you to. There was freedom to substitute foods, as long as the calories, fat, carb and protein counts were similar. By counting calories and eating a low-fat, high protein, lower carb diet I lost 30 pounds from January 2006 to May 2006. I felt great about my accomplishment. I once again weighed the same as I had when I met my husband – which was the least that I had weighed as an adult. I was proud of myself.

After the wedding the motivation to loose weight dwindled. I was nearing my senior year in college and decided to take 20 credits per semester in order to graduate in the spring of 2007. I ate what I wanted using my new found Curves nutrition guidelines that had served me well; although, as time passed I grew lazy and quit writing down my food intake and counting calories. I gained 5 pounds and then plateaued at that weight.

In August of 2008, my very dear friend, Melissa, introduced me to Tosca Reno’s Eat-Clean Diet. At first I was not interested in a “fad diet” and had a difficult time grasping the idea of NOT counting calories while simply watching my portion sizes and intake of certain foods to ensure a balanced, nutritious diet. I thought that I knew what I was doing and if I wanted, I could drop the weight. Then the realization that Melissa had lost all of her “baby weight” and then some by Eating Clean and working out hit me. If she could do it with a new baby and a full time job – why couldn’t I? She seemed so excited and motivated about the plan that it was contagious! I started to ask questions about what it meant to Eat-Clean.

Finally, in September, Melissa convinced me to purchase Tosca’s Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook – just to try it. I was instantly hooked! Tosca’s way of simply explaining the way our bodies require nutrition made much more sense than anything else that I had read. It was a no-nonsense approach to eating. Soon thereafter, I purchased Tosca’s Eat-Clean Diet book and read it cover to cover in a matter of days. After reading the Eat-Clean Diet book I cleaned out my cupboards and we started from scratch. At first my husband didn’t understand, but blindly trusted that what I was doing would make me happy. He was such a good sport. Now, he is just as into Clean Eating as I am and has leaned out and bulked up in the process. He jokes that he has lost “sympathy weight”.

In the first month of Eating Clean I lost 8 pounds! I was following the open Cooler 3 plan and wasn’t really working out. In November, I decided to take my workouts seriously. I followed Melissa’s advice and purchased the New Rules of Lifting for Women – that is when the transformation really begun. I was still not following a strict Cooler plan (simply Cooler 3 foods) and was still loosing weight.

I managed to follow the Clean Eating principles and loose a decent amount of weight through Thanksgiving, the loss of a very close Uncle, a vacation to Mexico at the beginning of December, 3 Christmas Celebrations, New Year’s Eve, and 5 Birthday Celebrations (dad, mom, husband, nephew, and father-in-law). When we travel to relatives’ homes I pack my cooler for the weekend. I resist temptations as much as possible and treat myself instead of holding myself back – and at all times I try to make smart, clean decisions about what I eat.

The weight loss finally began to slow in mid-January. I decided that it was about time that I try following one of the strict Cooler plans. I have been on Cooler 2 since – with one week of Cooler 1 a couple weeks ago. I am still slowly loosing weight and inches. In the month of February, I lost 4 inches and 1.5 pounds. I could have lost more weight, but gave myself a cheat meal each weekend in addition to a few glasses of wine. I feel like I am becoming stronger with each workout session and developing lean, powerful muscles. My muscle definition is finally showing as the fat is melting away.

I am amazed at the changes that have occurred in the shape and form of my body from Eating Clean and being dedicated to my workouts. I look at myself in the mirror and sometimes do not recognize the person starring back at me. My friends that have not seen me lately tell me that I do not look like myself – I look like someone else. I will let you be the judge of that.

Building Your Support System

A couple days ago I was talking to my good friend, Laura, about subject matter for blog posts and she suggested that I write about the importance of having a strong support system. When I got to thinking about it, I would not be where I am today without a sound support system.

Support is crucial to success. It is essential for building character, encouragement, inspiration, and originality.

Fortunately, support can come in many shapes, sizes, and mediums and as we develop our own personal network of support we end up knowing exactly where to turn for codling, a shoulder to cry on, advice, the hard truth, or motivation. Support systems keep us accountable to our goals and facilitate conquering them.

Unfortunately, our network of support can become detrimental to our success. It is important that our support system shapes into a positive place where we can be ourselves and get advice that is significant. We need to be strong enough to identify the positive and negative places to go to for support and keep moving ourselves toward the positive type of support. Oftentimes it is much easier to hear someone tell us what we want to hear rather than what we need to hear. BUT without the truth where would we be?

As I said earlier, support comes in all shapes, sizes, and mediums. What works for one person may not work for you - sources of support are not one size fits all. Many of us work on several unrelated goals at once and will need many types of support for each of these goals. Be careful not to put all of your eggs in one support basket – but don’t spread yourself thin with too many sources of support or you will run the risk of not benefit from each resource and simply becoming burnt out.

Here is a look into the support system that I have built for myself by goal/area of interest:

1. Christianity – I believe that nothing is achievable without God and it is through Him that all things are possible.
  • Daily Bible Verse Subscription
  • Church Community, specifically the Choir (I am a Member and regular Soloist)
  • Christian Radio
  • Family Members that are believers (specifically my husband, Allan; my parents, Al and Trish; my godparents, Becky and Jim)
  • Close Friends that are believers (specifically Natalie and Sam, Melissa, Carrie)

2. Music – I am as much in love with singing as I am with Clean Eating.
  • Church Choir Member and Soloist
  • Christian Radio
  • Sharing my love of music with family (specifically my dad, Al and my husband, Allan)

3. Clean Eating and Fitness – I can’t imagine my life without this beloved interest, however, it was not long ago (August 2008) that my friend, Melissa, introduced me to Tosca Reno and Alwyn Cosgrove.

4. The Environment, Organic Foods, Organic Cosmetics/Health & Beauty, Sustainable Food Chain, etc. – I am a huge supporter of sustainable and organic food. I think that this topic goes hand-in-hand with Clean Eating. Why spend the effort to Eat-Clean and workout if you are not actually making yourself healthier inside and out? Pesticides and chemicals will kill you.

5. Design and Art – I am in love with simple, modern art of all forms… architecture, furniture, interior design, color, museums, screen printing, drama/musicals, etc.

12 Weeks, 12 Pounds, 12 Inches

Today was measurement day, I try to take my measurements every 4 weeks. I find that I don't see as big of a difference if I measure more often. I am happy to say that in the last 12 weeks I have lost 12 pounds and 12 inches! I feel that this is a complete success and am VERY proud of myself because in the last 12 weeks there were many temptations and stressors: Thanksgiving, a week long vacation in Mexico, a long hospital stay of a close family member, his death, 3 Christmas Celebrations, New Year's, and my Dad, Mom, and Husband's birthdays.

I am now 25.75 inches and 21 pounds away from my goal. Which is completely achievable by the end of June.
