Yoga on the Brain

Lately my body has been yearning for yoga.

The week of Christmas was my "rest week" between Stages 3 and 4 of New Rules of Lifting for Women. I broke out my stash of yoga DVDs, as I usually do on my week off from weightlifting and interval running, and I don't think that there was an unsore muscle in my body! Actually, I think that the DOMS on my week off was worse than it has been since giving birth to Matthew.

Following my week of yoga, I have had a difficult time motivating myself to lift weights. Every time I pick up a dumbbell I stare longingly at the Sony Bravia LCD opposite our work out area and wish that I were practicing yoga instead of watching DVR'd soap operas. But last week, I reluctantly picked up the weights and began NROL4W Stage 4.

On Thursday, I spoke with my best friend and she also has yoga on the brain! We determined that it must be our bodies' way of calling for calm during such a chaotic time of the year. I promptly decided that I would give in to my mind and practice yoga this week.

Karen Voight: Yoga Power

I own a few yoga DVDs (Karen Voight Yoga Power and Yoga is Yummy). However, if I am practicing on a regular basis (more than 3 times per week) I like to supplement my practice. Yesterday I decided to check out the On Demand offerings from Comcast. ExerciseTV usually has a handful of intermediate to advanced yoga classes and yesterday was no exception!

At first I tried Jillian Michael's Yoga Meltdown Level 1 class, but really couldn't get into it. I was constantly looking up at the screen to see what she was doing instead of focusing on my body's movement. After some frustration, I switched to Yoga Sculpt and was at peace. I completed the class dripping in sweat and feeling challenged. It was wonderful! This week I plan on trying the following new OnDemand yoga classes:

Big Announcement!

Good Afternoon, Bloggers!

I have a very important announcement to make...

I am pregnant!!!

Baby Peters is due May 19th and I am in my 13th week of pregnancy. I am feeling well and taking good care of myself. In my first trimester, I struggled with all day nausea and fatigue that impacted my day-to-day activities. I also suffered from intense food aversions. As you can imagine these side effects combined made it pretty difficult to cook, bake and workout. Which left me with little to blog about!

The good news is that as I begin my second trimester, I am starting to feel like myself again. I have had a lot more energy and am regaining my interest in food. I was even able to pick up the latest issue of Clean Eating and Tosca’s new cookbook for recipe inspiration!

Being that I am pregnant, my food choices have shifted from weight loss to weight gain; which is a weird feeling and has required a complete shift in my mindset. So far, I have gained 3 pounds and plan on gaining a total of 6-9 pounds in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. So, that leaves me with another 3-6 pounds to gain until the end of December. From 20 weeks on, I plan on gaining 16-20 additional pounds. This will put me at a total weight gain of 22-29 pounds.

For now, I am focusing my workout efforts on prenatal yoga and walking/jogging on my treadmill. I find little interest in weight lifting at this point, but as I regain my energy I plan on creating a pregnancy weight lifting plan for myself.

I would love to hear your thoughts and advice on this wonderful time in my life! I cannot wait to share the next 27 weeks of pregnancy with you along with my newfound motherhood!

Birthday Week

Good Morning, Bloggers! I hope that you are having a wonderful week so far! I know that I have... clean, busy, and filled with activity. ;-)

Around our house, we celebrate Birthday Week, not just a Birth Day. So, starting last Sunday, my Birthday Week has begun. Usually Birthday Week would start exactly a week from my Birthday (which is Saturday, the 5th), but this year I opted to have it start a day later so that I can get the entire holiday weekend into Birthday Week.

In reality, there is not much that goes down during Birthday Week that is out of the ordinary... but it's just fun to say it's my birthday week and I can do what I want to do...

Over the weekend I planned on creating a new lifting program for the next few weeks; however, after much consideration, I have decided to restart New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROL4W). I finished all the last stages of the book last June and saw great results in fat loss, muscle gain and overall endurance. I also enjoyed the challenge and workout combinations and realized that I really miss the structure that the book brings to my routines. I started Workout A of Stage 1 on Monday. Does anyone want to join me?

I wish that I could find another book like NROL4W that is specifically tailored to women lifting heavy. I know that Rachel Cosgrove is coming out with a new book for women in November, The Female Body Breakthrough, and I am hoping that it will be a resource like NROL4W; but until then, I will be pumping iron in the NROL4W fashion.

I have not posted my eats in a couple days, so here they are:

Meal 1: 1/3 c dry oatmeal cooked with 4 egg whites, ½ banana, and 2 tbsp ground flax, 2 tbsp wheat germ

Meal 4: pumpkin protein muffins
Meal 5: Almost Tandoori Chicken + Sautéed Broccoli Rabe + whole wheat baguette

Have you pre-ordered the new Eat Clean Cookbook and Eat-Clean Diet Companion? If not, what are you waiting for? Both books are releasing this fall and Tosca just posted previews both books here. They look fabulous and I cannot wait to get my hands on them!!!

Also, Tosca's new book The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged is now available for Amazon pre-order.

Now if we could only get Flexing at 49 aired in the U.S. we would be set!

The Black Beauty and Eats

I have been meaning to post a pic of the new Rav4 since we brought it home a couple weeks ago. Here is our Black Beauty at a scenic overlook near Red Wing, MN.

I would really like to get back in the habit of posting my daily eats here on my blog. I keep a food journal at home, but it's always nice to have the accountability of sharing my eats here with YOU. I am still eating strict Cooler 2 eats.

So, here are yesterday's eats:

Meal 1 - egg whites + chicken sausage + cinn-raisin sprouted grain toast
Meal 2 - yogurt + frozen raspberries, thawed
Meal 3 - leftover roasted turkey breast + romaine + homemade honey dijon dressing
Meal 4 - hard boiled egg whites + cucumbers/corn
Meal 5 - Rachel Sandwiches (pumpernickel bread/leftover roast turkey/sauerkraut/organic 1,000 island dressing/organic low fat swiss cheese) + romaine + honey dijon dressing
Meal 6 - kefir + protein powder + frozen raspberries + spinach
Meal 7 - 2 raw chocolate cookies

And today's eats:

Actual:
Meal 1 - egg whites + chicken sausage + cinn-raisin sprouted grain toast
Meal 2 - yogurt + mango + multigrain flakes cereal
Meal 3 - leftover chili + romaine/corn + honey dijon dressing

Planned:
Meal 4 - hard boiled egg whites + mango
Meal 5 - (postworkout) kefir + protein powder + frozen strawberries/spinach
Meal 6 - grilled salmon + green beans
Meal 7 - (optional) brown rice cake or cinn-raisin sprouted grain toast

I am SUPER hungry today! I don't know what has come over me, but I have been needing to eat every 2 - 2.5 hours versus my usual 3 hour intervals. Yikes! I must have really kicked it hard on my interval run yesterday and now my metabolism is zooming!

Since finishing NROL4W, I have been making my own heavy lifting routines and last week I finished the last round of workouts that I planned for myself (I like to switch up my routine every 6-8 weeks) and need to spend some time with my Oxygen Magazines, NROL4W and The Eat-Clean Diet Workout book creating a new workout routine for the next 6 - 8 weeks. This week will consist of running and yoga. As I like to take a week off from heavy lifting in between routines.

Have a wonderfully CLEAN day!

Summer Has Arrived!!!

I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but today is going to be HOT and HUMID again! We went from rainy barely 60 degree days to a heat index of 105 in less than two weeks. The weather has been so crazy lately, that this morning that the power was out for over an hour.

Now that the 12 week competition is finished, I am working on setting some new short term goals. These goals will also include a new workout plan (as I only have 1 NROL4W workout left), strict Cooler 2 eats, and starting a new food related project, which I will be announcing soon.

Now on to some eats. Last week I made a super yummy pesto dinner. Here some of the ingredients that I used (I also added 1/2 bag of frozen sweet peas and 1/2 bag of frozen california mix):

Unfortunately, my camera died before I could take a good picture of the finished product, but it was delish!

TRX

So, I have been doing some research on other workout programs and I think that I have found my new fitness program, drum roll please... the TRX!!!

You can even use it during pregnancy.

Has anyone used this program before? If so, did you use the home workout bundle or take a class at a gym?

Sweet Pain!

I started NROL4W Stage 6 yesterday and I could already feel the sweet pain last night before bed. Usually it take 24 hours for the soreness to set in, but not with this Stage. Stage 6 is optional and consists of strength building exercises to really improve the power of your muscles. I am excited to see how strong that I can get in the next 3.5 weeks!

I put together the Iron Gym last night. It was pretty simple to assemble, as long as you pay close attention to the instructions; although, the tools that come with it are pretty weak. There is only one doorframe in my house that was appropriate to use with the Iron Gym as you need to be able to slide this little anchor behind the doorframe to ensure that the Iron Gym doesn't fall off of the wall while you are on it (that would be a BAD thing!).

I have decided that I would like to start incorporating yoga into my fitness routine. I have always been very interested in yoga and a few years I ago I watched/practiced with the FitTv program Namaste Yoga; however, I soon grew tired of having to fast forward through the commercials. I would definitely use FitTv more often if they didn't have commercials during their programs, but I digress... I would like to incorporate yoga into my routine, but yoga classes at studios by my house are expensive ($15-20 per class) and that is a bit out of the budget right now. So, in the meantime, I have been considering purchasing a few yoga DVDs, using a site like yogadownload.com, free OnDemand shows from FitTv, and using the videos that Polly has on yoga is yummy. Any suggestions?

Here are my planned eats for the day:

Pre-M1 - amazing grass chocolate green superfood in almond milk
M1- egg whites + chicken sausage + 1/2 cup overnight oat groat porridge with 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1 tbsp ground flax, 2 tbsp wheat germ + cinnamon + vanilla
M2 - 1 cup nonfat plain yogurt cheese + frozen mango/blueberries, thawed
M3 - 1/2 pita + chicken + mixed greens
M4 - apple + 1 tbsp peanut butter + 1 tbsp raw almond butter
M5 - VitaMix smoothie: strawberries/dates + spinach + protein powder + frozen whey from yogurt cheese + maca + 1 tbsp chia seeds
M6 - strawberry chicken salad, no cheese and dressing on the side, at DeGidio's for the Choir year end Supper

NROL4W Stage 5 COMPLETE!!!

Yesterday morning I finished Stage 5 of New Rules of Lifting for Women! It is suggested that you take off one week between stages, so I will be taking active rest days until Monday when I start Stage 6. Stage 6 includes negative pull ups, so I purchased an Iron Gym. On Friday morning, I think that I will put it together and start to play around with it.

I have been promising to post pictures of the new bike and here they are! The other day, Allan and I took a long bike ride from our house to Fort Snelling and biked along the Mississippi River. Half way through our bike ride, we stopped at this cute fishing dock in the backwaters. How beautiful!!! After the ride, my legs were sore - riding up and down the bluffs of the Mississippi was an excellent workout!

Allan and his bike along with my bike (on the right)

Me biking along the parkway on our way home

Sporting my new Twin Six Jersey

We also went and test drove one of these:

We are seriously considering picking one up, but are not sure if we should take advantage of the great deals they are offering on the 2009 models or if we should wait and check out the new 2010 model.

Or just switch it up completely and get one of these:

(hybrid, of course)

Bright and Sunny Day!

I am not going to believe it until it has been proven to me... but Spring may actually be here! I am staying optimistic, but will not be fooled again. It did snow here last Saturday and Sunday. :(

I am loving the new fridge and can't wait to fill it up with groceries this week. I thought that the larger freezer would be helpful, but it is already full. Looks like I may have to buy a small freezer for the basement still. Oh well.

Last week Allan and I decided to surprise both of our Mom's with a little Easter surprise and purchased them each a full set of Tosca's Eat-Clean Diet books (not the Workout book). My mom called this morning and was excited about them. We have not heard from Allan's mom yet. Hopefully it will help to answer some of their questions about Clean Eating.

I made Chicken and Black Bean Quesadillas for supper tonight and they were amazing! I will be posting the recipe and pics soon.

Happy Wednesday!!!

It's crazy to think that the week is officially half over. Do you feel as though your week has been productive? I feel like I have not sat down and just relaxed! Why do I do this to myself? I definitely have had a very productive workout in addition to making time to eat completely clean and fit in two workouts.

Tonight my husband and I decided to host the Easter celebration for both of our families. We normally host Thanksgiving and last year we hosted Easter at the last minute (literally the day before). If anyone has any good ideas for a Clean main entree for Easter, let me know. I am thinking about making a sirloin roast.

Here are my eats for today:

M1 - 1/2 cup egg whites, 1 chicken sausage, 1/3 cup dry oatmeal cooked in 2/3 cup water + cinnamon + vanilla
M2 - vita-mix: spinach + berry mix/mango + orange + protein powder + flax + bee pollen + water
M3 - roast turkey breast + fresh salsa + 1/2 pita
M4 - 1 nectarine + chocolate protein bar
M5 - 1 organic chicken sausage + sauerkraut + sprouted wheat bun
M6 - 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt + strawberries + protein powder + vanilla

I decided that my knee was feeling a little better today and I decided to do a lower body workout. Here is my workout routine from this morning:

Sissy Squats: BW/10 reps, BW/10 reps
Lunges: BW/10 reps each leg, BW/10 reps each leg
Hack Lifts: 20lb/10 reps, 20lb/10 reps
Calf Raises: BW/20 reps, BW/20 reps
Deadlifts: 40 lb/20 reps, 40lb/20 reps
Swiss Ball Crunches with Overhead Reach: BW/15 reps, BW/15 reps

An Amazing Transformation Begins

"It is impossible not to love someone who makes toast for you." —Nigel Slater

I have decided to post before and after pictures of myself – from 200+ pounds to where I am now. It’s still a bit difficult for me to see the transformation, 45.5 pounds lighter and sometimes I still feel like I look the same as I did back in 2005 before I started loosing weight.

Christmas of 2005, I found myself in the full swing of wedding preparations. I had purchased and received my wedding dress, which my mom had to pay an extra $50 for a size 18 to fit my bust measurements, the location was booked, and it was time to take care of the small details. I knew that I did not want to be overweight on the “happiest day of my life”. I was determined to change something – anything in my life – so that I could feel good about the person starring back at me in the mirror.

I had always been overweight growing up – but not this overweight. The challenges of going to college full time and working 30 hours a week had taken a toll on the way that I nourished myself and left little time for physical activity. I had gained over 20 pounds since I had met my husband just a short 2 years earlier. How had this happened?

I knew that I would need to take drastic measures, but I did not have the time to work out several times per week. I would have to revamp my diet and make the most out of my trips to the gym. My mom was a member at the local Curves and had joined a class that followed the Curves way of eating. Basically, you followed a pre-set 6-week menu that consisted of 5 smaller meals per day. You ate exactly what the menu told you to. There was freedom to substitute foods, as long as the calories, fat, carb and protein counts were similar. By counting calories and eating a low-fat, high protein, lower carb diet I lost 30 pounds from January 2006 to May 2006. I felt great about my accomplishment. I once again weighed the same as I had when I met my husband – which was the least that I had weighed as an adult. I was proud of myself.

After the wedding the motivation to loose weight dwindled. I was nearing my senior year in college and decided to take 20 credits per semester in order to graduate in the spring of 2007. I ate what I wanted using my new found Curves nutrition guidelines that had served me well; although, as time passed I grew lazy and quit writing down my food intake and counting calories. I gained 5 pounds and then plateaued at that weight.

In August of 2008, my very dear friend, Melissa, introduced me to Tosca Reno’s Eat-Clean Diet. At first I was not interested in a “fad diet” and had a difficult time grasping the idea of NOT counting calories while simply watching my portion sizes and intake of certain foods to ensure a balanced, nutritious diet. I thought that I knew what I was doing and if I wanted, I could drop the weight. Then the realization that Melissa had lost all of her “baby weight” and then some by Eating Clean and working out hit me. If she could do it with a new baby and a full time job – why couldn’t I? She seemed so excited and motivated about the plan that it was contagious! I started to ask questions about what it meant to Eat-Clean.

Finally, in September, Melissa convinced me to purchase Tosca’s Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook – just to try it. I was instantly hooked! Tosca’s way of simply explaining the way our bodies require nutrition made much more sense than anything else that I had read. It was a no-nonsense approach to eating. Soon thereafter, I purchased Tosca’s Eat-Clean Diet book and read it cover to cover in a matter of days. After reading the Eat-Clean Diet book I cleaned out my cupboards and we started from scratch. At first my husband didn’t understand, but blindly trusted that what I was doing would make me happy. He was such a good sport. Now, he is just as into Clean Eating as I am and has leaned out and bulked up in the process. He jokes that he has lost “sympathy weight”.

In the first month of Eating Clean I lost 8 pounds! I was following the open Cooler 3 plan and wasn’t really working out. In November, I decided to take my workouts seriously. I followed Melissa’s advice and purchased the New Rules of Lifting for Women – that is when the transformation really begun. I was still not following a strict Cooler plan (simply Cooler 3 foods) and was still loosing weight.

I managed to follow the Clean Eating principles and loose a decent amount of weight through Thanksgiving, the loss of a very close Uncle, a vacation to Mexico at the beginning of December, 3 Christmas Celebrations, New Year’s Eve, and 5 Birthday Celebrations (dad, mom, husband, nephew, and father-in-law). When we travel to relatives’ homes I pack my cooler for the weekend. I resist temptations as much as possible and treat myself instead of holding myself back – and at all times I try to make smart, clean decisions about what I eat.

The weight loss finally began to slow in mid-January. I decided that it was about time that I try following one of the strict Cooler plans. I have been on Cooler 2 since – with one week of Cooler 1 a couple weeks ago. I am still slowly loosing weight and inches. In the month of February, I lost 4 inches and 1.5 pounds. I could have lost more weight, but gave myself a cheat meal each weekend in addition to a few glasses of wine. I feel like I am becoming stronger with each workout session and developing lean, powerful muscles. My muscle definition is finally showing as the fat is melting away.

I am amazed at the changes that have occurred in the shape and form of my body from Eating Clean and being dedicated to my workouts. I look at myself in the mirror and sometimes do not recognize the person starring back at me. My friends that have not seen me lately tell me that I do not look like myself – I look like someone else. I will let you be the judge of that.

Here are some before and after pictures over the last 3.5 years.

Building Your Support System

A couple days ago I was talking to my good friend, Laura, about subject matter for blog posts and she suggested that I write about the importance of having a strong support system. When I got to thinking about it, I would not be where I am today without a sound support system.

Support is crucial to success. It is essential for building character, encouragement, inspiration, and originality.

Fortunately, support can come in many shapes, sizes, and mediums and as we develop our own personal network of support we end up knowing exactly where to turn for codling, a shoulder to cry on, advice, the hard truth, or motivation. Support systems keep us accountable to our goals and facilitate conquering them.

Unfortunately, our network of support can become detrimental to our success. It is important that our support system shapes into a positive place where we can be ourselves and get advice that is significant. We need to be strong enough to identify the positive and negative places to go to for support and keep moving ourselves toward the positive type of support. Oftentimes it is much easier to hear someone tell us what we want to hear rather than what we need to hear. BUT without the truth where would we be?

As I said earlier, support comes in all shapes, sizes, and mediums. What works for one person may not work for you - sources of support are not one size fits all. Many of us work on several unrelated goals at once and will need many types of support for each of these goals. Be careful not to put all of your eggs in one support basket – but don’t spread yourself thin with too many sources of support or you will run the risk of not benefit from each resource and simply becoming burnt out.

Here is a look into the support system that I have built for myself by goal/area of interest:

1. Christianity – I believe that nothing is achievable without God and it is through Him that all things are possible.
  • Daily Bible Verse Subscription
  • Church Community, specifically the Choir (I am a Member and regular Soloist)
  • Christian Radio
  • Family Members that are believers (specifically my husband, Allan; my parents, Al and Trish; my godparents, Becky and Jim)
  • Close Friends that are believers (specifically Natalie and Sam, Melissa, Carrie)

2. Music – I am as much in love with singing as I am with Clean Eating.
  • Church Choir Member and Soloist
  • Christian Radio
  • Sharing my love of music with family (specifically my dad, Al and my husband, Allan)

3. Clean Eating and Fitness – I can’t imagine my life without this beloved interest, however, it was not long ago (August 2008) that my friend, Melissa, introduced me to Tosca Reno and Alwyn Cosgrove.

4. The Environment, Organic Foods, Organic Cosmetics/Health & Beauty, Sustainable Food Chain, etc. – I am a huge supporter of sustainable and organic food. I think that this topic goes hand-in-hand with Clean Eating. Why spend the effort to Eat-Clean and workout if you are not actually making yourself healthier inside and out? Pesticides and chemicals will kill you.

5. Design and Art – I am in love with simple, modern art of all forms… architecture, furniture, interior design, color, museums, screen printing, drama/musicals, etc.

D-I-S-C-I-P-L-I-N-E ! ! !

I have been out of my routine for a couple weeks now and am in desperate need of getting things to SLOW DOWN so that I can re-focus on myself and my goals! Today I am doing New Rule of Lifting for Women Workout B of Stage 4 for the first time. I am still sore from workout A, which I did on Saturday morning. Stage 4 is identical to Stage 2 - which I find to be kind of nice because it was really easy to get into the workout and do it all the way through without worrying too much about whether or not I was doing the exercises correctly or not - because I am already comfortable with them. I did buy a set of adjustable dumbbells last week and it was really nice to be able to up my weights significantly on each exercise - it left the sweet pain in my muscles that I still feel today! :)

Rachel Cosgrove made a very interesting blog post the other day that you should check out. In the post she talks about her workouts and the nutrition plan that she suggests to clients to drop some weight.

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

I apologize that it has been a few days since I have posted. I have been at the hospital with my mom and the blogger home page was blocked by their internet access. My mom's surgery was a success and she received her discharge papers this morning. My dad will be happy to have her home.

I have been keeping it pretty clean while at the hospital. I packed a cooler both days with my Cooler 1 Protein Bars, low-fat plain yogurt, and fresh fruit. I did eat some of the hospital food - I made salads at the salad bar and brought some of the Simple Vinaigrette from the Winter '08 Clean Eating Magazine with me to put on it - as none of their dressings were even close to clean - lots of High-Fructose Corn Syrup :(. We ate at Panera last night and I had a nice little salad and a half a chicken sandwich on a whole grain bagel - it was good.

Here are my Valentine's gifts to you:

  • A radio interview with Tosca Reno can be accessed here, click on the microphone half way down the right hand side of the page
  • Tosca also did an interview with Micheal Ray Dresser that can be downloaded and listened to here
  • Tosca has been a busy girl, and she also did this interview
I have been feeling under the weather and have not worked out since Wednesday. This morning I plan on starting Phase 4 of New Rules of Lifting for Women. Since most of my symptoms are Upper Respiratory, I will hold off on doing my interval running until after the symptoms have passed.

Days 5 and 6 from Alwyn Cosgrove...

Day 5

The Hierarchy of Fat Loss (cont.)

4. Activities that burn calories and elevate metabolism
The next level of fat loss programming would be a similar activity. We're still looking at activities that eat up calories and increase EPOC.

EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption) is defined scientifically as the "recovery of metabolic rate back to pre-exercise levels" and "can require several minutes for light exercise and several hours for hard intervals."

Essentially, we're looking for activities that keep us burning more calories after the exercise session. If you aren't using fat burning programs that maximize EPOC then you are:

             1. Wasting your time

             2. Using fat burning methodologies s from last century

5. Activities that burn calories but don't necessarily maintain muscle or elevate metabolism
This is the "icing on the cake" -- adding in activities that'll burn up additional calories but don't necessarily contribute to increasing metabolism. This is the least effective tool in your arsenal as it doesn't burn much outside of the primary exercise session.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 6

Today is the last day of the Afterburn Training eCourse. We are going to wrap up the course with a closer look at both resistance and interval training.

Metabolic Resistance Training
Basically we're using resistance training as the cornerstone of our fat loss programming. Our goal is to work every muscle group hard, frequently, and with an intensity that creates a massive "metabolic disturbance" or "afterburn" that leaves the metabolism elevated for several hours post-workout.

A 2002 study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology used a circuit training protocol of 12 sets in 31 minutes. EPOC was elevated significantly for 38 hours post-workout.

Thirty-eight hours is a pretty significant timeframe for metabolism to be elevated. If you trained at 9AM until 10AM on Monday morning, you're still burning more calories (without training) at midnight on Tuesday.

Can we compound this with additional training within that 38 hours? No research has been done, but I have enough case studies to believe that you can.

In my experience, full body training in a superset, tri-set, or circuit format (with non-competing exercises) in a rep range that generates lactic acid (and pushes the lactic acid threshold or LAT) seems to create the biggest metabolic demand. It makes sense: training legs, back, and chest will burn more calories and elevate metabolism more than an isolated approach training one of them.

The rep range that seems to work best is the 8-12 hypertrophy range, although going higher will work just as well with a less trained population.

High Intensity Anaerobic Interval Training
The second key "ingredient" in fat loss programming is high intensity interval training (HIIT). It burns more calories than steady state and elevates metabolism significantly more than other forms of cardio. The downside is that it flat-out sucks to do it!

The landmark study in interval training was from Tremblay et al. This study pitted 20 weeks of endurance training against 15 weeks of interval training:

Energy cost of endurance training = 28661 calories.
Energy cost of interval training = 13614 calories (less than half)

The interval training group showed a nine times greater loss in subcutaneous fat than the endurance group (when corrected for energy cost).

Read that again. Calorie for calorie, the interval training group lost nine times more fat overall. Why? Maybe it's EPOC, an upregulation of fat burning enzyme activity. I don't care. I'm a real world guy.

If the interval training group had lost the same fat as the endurance group, we'd get the same results in less time. That means interval training is a better tool in your fat loss arsenal.

If you want a fat loss program that has everything we've talked about over the past 6 days (all the good parts) and you want to lose fat at the fastest possible rate then you want Afterburn Training.

Hierarchy of Fat Loss

It is very nice to get a validation of the Clean Eating way of life from someone who is independent of Clean Eating. The key messages of today's eCourse from Alwyn Cosgrove is that proper Nutrition is invaluable and combining that with building lean muscle to increase your RMR will produce fat loss.

Today we starting looking at what you need to do to burn fat. But before we get started I want you to know that this is not fat burning theory. I get people lean everyday. Simply put, I can get 20 pounds of fat off a client faster than my competition.

Today and tomorrow we are going to look at my hierachy of fat loss. If you want to get lean these are the things you need to pay attention to (in order!)

The Hierarchy of Fat Loss

1. Correct Nutrition
There's pretty much nothing that can be done to out-train a crappy diet. You quite simply have to create a caloric deficit while eating enough protein and essential fats. There's no way around this.

2. See #1
Yep. It really is that important. Several trainers have espoused that the only difference between training for muscle gain and training for fat loss is your diet. I think that's a massive oversimplification, but it does reinforce how important and effective correct nutrition is toward your ultimate goal.

3. Activities that burn calories, maintain/promote muscle mass, and elevate metabolism
I think it's fairly obvious that the bulk of calories burned are determined by our resting metabolic rate or RMR. The amount of calories burned outside of our resting metabolism (through exercise, thermic effect of feeding, etc.) is a smaller contributor to overall calories burned per day.

We can also accept that RMR is largely a function of how much muscle you have on your body -- and how hard it works. Therefore, adding activities that promote or maintain muscle mass will make that muscle mass work harder and elevate the metabolic rate. This will become our number one training priority when developing fat loss programs.

Last day of Big FAT Mistakes

I am guessing that this will be the last of the extremely sarcastic (and funny) tips to gain fat. I am really looking forward to what tomorrow's eCourse will entail. For today, please enjoy Alwyn Cosgrove's Big Fat Mistake 5...
Today is the last day of Big FAT Mistakes. Tomorrow we'll get into what you need to do to burn fat.

Big Fat Mistake 5: Perform the exact same workout over and over without ever increasing the intensity.

Doing the same workout each time will confirm that you haven't become any stronger or more fit, but instead have stayed exactly the same or become worse.

Fat Gaining Recommendation: Go to the gym every day and do the exact same thing. Get on the same cardio machine, in front of the same television, and walk the same speed everyday.

Why this works to store fat: This will ensure that you don't gain any lean body mass and that your workout won't limit your fat storing capabilities. You don't ever want to push yourself harder than you're used to.
